HOW TO RECYCLE A BATTERY.

The growing consumer attraction to going green is producing businesses that focus on green services, such as a battery recycling business. Since Americans alone use millions of electronics each year that require batteries, millions of batteries wind up in landfills around the country. The acid in these batteries and the materials that compose them are not biodegradable, and can contaminate the soil and other areas of the environment. When you start a battery recycling business, you are not only starting a business that can make you money, but one which may also help to make the world a better place to live.

Essence of Recycling

Recycling batteries prevents hazardous materials from finding their way into landfills and polluting the environment. Batteries commonly contain materials that are harmful or even fatal when ingested. Batteries can either be refurbished for reuse or processed to extract their components as raw materials for use in manufacture of other products.

Business Setup

You can establish a business that either recycles batteries or collects and sells recyclable batteries to other companies. Either way you need to determine the niche of batteries you want to process; the decision needs to be by availability and rate of return. You need a warehouse where you can store the batteries before they are either processed or shipped. To recycle the batteries yourself, you need a significant amount of capital to buy the necessary equipment and put disposal procedures in place to comply with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations.

Lead-Acid Batteries

Vehicle batteries are most often the lead-acid type; since each unit comprises reusable lead, they are suitable for recycling. You may find several metal recycling facilities that process these batteries in your state already. As a small business you can make money either by collecting and supplying these companies with used lead-acid batteries or by implementing the recycling technology at your premises, as long as you adhere to stringent EPA guidelines.

Mobile Phone Batteries

Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) batteries are the type found most often in current cell phones. You can make money recycling phone batteries by collecting them from discarded phones, then using a battery analyzer to determine their state of health. You may find functional battery packs and battery packs that can be restored with a simple service. The serviceable batteries can be sold to cellular phone companies for restoration. Batteries that cannot be restored can be sold to a recycling company for recovery of steel and zinc.
